Kaoru has just learned from Kenshin about how he got his cross-shaped scar, and how Tomoe, Kenshin's first wife, died. She's realized that in spite of their relationship Kenshin still hasn't honestly "come home" to her because of Tomoe. She's weeping from shock and grief when, from behind her, she hears the approach of Enishi, Kenshin's former brother-in-law, who is about to kidnap her.
